That’s the spirit of what we do at the Prospect.

Last summer for our August 2022 print issue, we set out to imagine the society we want a decade from now, launching our Prospects 2032 series to discuss big ideas that could fundamentally change American society but haven’t fully made it into the mainstream yet.

We’re proud to have started a conversation about big, ambitious policy ideas that could transform our economy, our working life, our political processes, our health, and our future. And it has an impact; some of those ideas have since entered the mainstream.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, Managing Editor Ryan Cooper wrote about the threat of judicial despotism and offered a solution to the right-wing Court’s increasing overreach: ending judicial review. And now, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has taken this idea to heart, urging the Biden administration to protect abortion access by ignoring an anticipated ruling from a Trump-appointed judge banning abortion medication.

Contributor Sarah Jaffe wrote about the need for a shorter workweek, and how recent trials have proved the benefits of a four-day week for workers, for the economy, and the climate. Six months later, a large number of companies in the U.K. who had participated in a four-day workweek study have since decided to make the change permanent, citing lower levels of employee turnover and higher productivity. Sen. Bernie Sanders has noticed as well, calling for a four-day week stateside.

That’s the spirit of what we do at the Prospect: telling the stories and uplifting the ideas that matter in American politics, planting the flag on big ideas that expand the conversation and giving progressives a place to aspire to in the future.
