A new court filing exposed that while Fox News’s primetime hosts busily sold false conspiracy theories about a stolen election on the air, they knew they were spreading a dangerous lie.
As it so often does, the truth came out in court: Fox’s leadership was fully aware that its own claims of election fraud were nonsense, but they pushed the lies anyways because they were afraid of telling viewers the truth — Donald Trump lost the election.
Fox News gave the Big Lie a megaphone to gain money and ratings, and our democracy paid the price on January 6th. Millions of people still believe what the Fox hosts said, despite mountains of evidence debunking the conspiracy theory.
This is why honest courtrooms matter – it is a crime to lie in court. I’m hopeful Fox News will be held accountable for its lies in this ongoing defamation case.
Meanwhile, I’m working to strengthen our democracy so that nothing like January 6th ever happens again. We can start by getting big anonymous money out of politics, protecting voting rights, and making voting more accessible.
