Adriana was shaken to the core when her nephew was incarcerated. Her family quickly realized that they didn’t know much about the legal system, so she started to look for resources.
Her search led her to Outrageous Justice, Prison Fellowship’s free small-group study that explores the criminal justice system through a biblical lens using current events and personal stories. Adriana downloaded a copy of Outrageous Justice and completed the study.
“I learned that when justice really restores, it not only helps to heal people like [my nephew] but also the community,” she says. “There is a place in the justice system for punishment and restoration. The whole study was a real learning experience for me and for my family as well.”
Our criminal justice system doesn’t always restore. Disproportionate sentencing, a lack of rehabilitative programming, and barriers that limit successful reentry contribute to high recidivism rates. Two out of three people released from prison will be re-arrested within three years.
How can followers of Christ respond to such a complex, broken system?
