Questions to ask your medical professional

When your child is prescribed a pain reliever, ask the prescriber (doctor, dentist, etc.) if it is an opioid. If it is, you may think "my doctor prescribed this, so it must be safe," but you also may be worried about how risky it is for your child to take opioids.

It's okay to ask your doctor questions - in fact, we encourage it! It's important to become fully aware of the risks these medications pose to help minimize the chances that your child will misuse them. Here are some questions to consider:

- Is a prescription opioid necessary to treat their pain? Would alternatives like an over-the-counter pain reliever work?
- How many pills are being prescribed and over how long of a period? Is it necessary to prescribe this amount of pills?
- What are the risks of misusing this drug?
- What are the potential interactions between this medication and other medications? Between this and alcohol or other substances they may be using?
