ACLU Supporter – Roe v. Wade recognized our constitutional right to an abortion 47 years ago today. In the nearly five decades since, politicians have passed 483 medically-unnecessary, politically-motivated restrictions, leaving a countless number of people without meaningful access to abortion care. But 2020 could be Roe's most consequential year yet. With this much on the line, we need to stay informed and be ready to fight back. Here's what to look out for: Taking abortion rights to the Supreme Court. On March 4, the Court will hear arguments for June Medical Services v. Gee, a case that could uphold state abortion restrictions identical to those struck down by the Court just four years ago and allow states to continue shutting down clinics with no medical justifications. 207 abortion opponents in Congress have asked the Court to go even further and overturn Roe entirely. Continue fighting in the states. Already this year, a total of 12 states have introduced abortion bans from the earliest days of pregnancy. Not all will advance, but there's a genuine risk of at least five more bans – like the ones that passed last year in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and four other states – being enacted this year. Less aggressive but equally harmful measures restricting abortion access are being considered in states across the country, too. Rack up more wins. It's not all bad news. Inspired by bold actions from states like Illinois, Maine, and New York, legislators are gearing up to ensure – and expand – access to abortion no matter what happens at SCOTUS. Learn more about what's happening in the fight for abortion rights in 2020. Remember: abortion remains legal in all 50 states – thanks to lawsuits from the ACLU and our partner organizations, and grassroots activism from people like you. ACLU Supporter, we're in the fight of our lives, but whatever twists and turns we may encounter this year, the ACLU will keep fighting to fulfill Roe's promise. Thanks for being in this fight, Jessica Arons |
