Fixing Science
Practical Solutions for the Irreproducibility Crisis
Conference
February 7 – 8, 2020 • Oakland, California
Many alarming headlines claiming to be based on recent scientific findings have turned out to be false. Such findings simply can’t be reproduced—and if you can’t reproduce a result, it isn’t science. However, such headlines are just the tip of the iceberg. A huge amount of ordinary scientific findings published in peer-reviewed journals can’t be replicated. As a result, something has gone terribly wrong in the name of science.

This failure is called the “Irreproducibility Crisis.” It is the result of improper use of statistics, arbitrary research techniques, lack of accountability, interest groups, political groupthink, and a scientific culture biased toward producing positive and politically favored results. By some estimates, half of all recent scientific research could well be irreproducible.

Our upcoming conference, “Fixing Science,” will bring together scholars from numerous disciplines to examine this serious problem and practical ways to restore science. Panelists will suggest how scientists, academics, business and social leaders, government officials, and philanthropists should reform scientific research. Special panels will describe how the irreproducibility crisis affects specific disciplines, including economics and climate science. Other panels will examine topics such as groupthink and falsifiability. Throughout, “Fixing Science” will focus on which reforms have worked so far and which have not, in order to help us craft and pursue initiatives going forward. The conference will help advance practical solutions to the “Irreproducibility Crisis” by scientists, civil society, and lawmakers.
