March On: Celebrating Black History Month

Friend, happy Black History Month!

Each week of Black History Month, we’ve been profiling Black women in politics who inspire us to keep fighting for progressive change – in our communities and nationwide!

Today, we’re celebrating Representative Lucy McBath of Georgia.

Rep. Lucy McBath was elected to Congress in 2018, when she defeated an NRA-backed Republican and flipped her district from red to blue. McBath made history as the first woman of color to represent her district.

McBath has always been committed to advocating for justice – but after losing her son to senseless gun violence in 2012, McBath took on the fight for common-sense gun reforms by leading rallies, meeting with elected officials in D.C., and eventually running for Congress to make change at the federal level.

Rep. McBath: Gun violence in our news and neighborhoods is all the evidence we need to continue this fight. I refuse to rest until we pass comprehensive gun safety reform to protect our beloved communities.

Now, Rep. McBath is making progress on the issue that brought her to Congress – she’s helped pass bills to enact universal background checks and red flag laws, in addition to the historic bipartisan gun control bill that President Biden signed into law last year.
