What Your Kid Really Needs Is A Good Listener ([link removed])
It’s hard being a teenager, now more than ever. And it’s hard being the parent of a teenager and trying to support them through this stage, too. What do you say to them? What do you do? How the hell are you supposed to get them to open up?
Dr. Lisa Damour, Ohio-based family therapist and host of the “Ask Lisa” podcast, has written a new book called The Emotional Life of Teenagers to answer some of those questions, and our EIC, Kate Auletta, called her up to ask about it. It’s full of really useful, practical advice: “The most important thing that parents can do is to serve as a steady presence. This means being attentive to their teens' distress, but not reacting to it from a place of fear,” Dr. Damour tells us, for instance. And there’s advice about how to navigate the tween years, too — if you’re not quite there yet. Definitely don’t miss this one.

Are You Team Return The Grocery Cart Or Team Leave It? ([link removed])
Have you run into the concept of the “shopping cart theory” in your travels around the Internet? It goes something like this, Jennifer Taber VanDerwerken explains: “Good people return the shopping cart. Careless, selfish, bad people do not.” And she is not having it. “Like so much else that's bubbled up on social media, the argument lacks nuance, room for context, and crucially, ignores the realities of parenting completely. Hell, it mostly ignores mothers ([link removed]) , who do 80% of the grocery shopping in families with children.” Allow her to explain!
