John,

Yesterday, I announced my candidacy for the U.S. Senate (where there are currently no Black women serving, and where only two have ever served in our near 250-year history), because when you stand on the side of justice, you don't quit if they don't give you a seat at the table – you bring a folding chair.

Since coming to Congress almost 25 years ago, I’ve fought my heart out to advance our shared values. I’ve stood alone to say no to endless wars, held the line to expand access to health care and fought to enact our progressive agenda. And I’m still at it.

Here’s why: My resolve to fight for a progressive future came from growing up in segregated El Paso, Texas – where my sister and I were the only Black girls at our school.

It came from integrating my high school cheerleading squad, when I couldn't join because of the color of my skin.

And it came from having to travel to a back alley in Mexico to receive an abortion because the care I needed wasn't available in the states.

Every day, I carry these experiences with me to Congress to be a voice for the voiceless – and fight to make sure every person has the opportunity to succeed. That's why I'm running for Senate – but I need your help.

Can I count on you to chip in $5 right now to jumpstart our campaign so we can win this race and secure a progressive future for our country?

My life story is the epitome of the American dream, and it's prepared me for this upcoming fight.

As one of the highest-ranking Black women in Congress, I know very well that diverse voices are sorely missed in the Senate. Today and every day, I remain committed to fighting for true equality and a bold, progressive future that works for all. So please, if you believe in me and our movement, I'm asking you to pitch in $5 or more before our midnight deadline, so we can hit the ground running and have the resources we need to win.

Thank you for helping power this campaign, and I look forward to our work ahead.
