No one should go hungry in the richest country in the world. Yet, if certain lawmakers in the House of Representatives have their way, that’s exactly what will happen in the ongoing negotiations to raise the debt ceiling.

Right-wing members of Congress continue to promise to eliminate the federal deficit over the next decade -- by making extreme cuts to social programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.¹

Millions of SNAP participants are already slated to lose $90 a month on average per person this March, because that is when Congress has decided to end pandemic Emergency Allotments. These harsh cuts are occurring despite rising food prices nationwide. But that’s not enough for the right-wing. They want more cuts to SNAP, which would be devastating for millions of households and drive people further into poverty.

We’re not taking this lying down. The Coalition on Human Needs is joining our partners and allies to put the pressure on Congress to expand SNAP benefits -- and to reject onerous work requirements and other cuts. SNAP remains the most effective tool this country has to combat hunger for children, adults with disabilities, and veterans. The extremists who want to force cuts in basic needs programs before allowing an increase in the federal authority to borrow would like to shrink the SNAP program, in part through work requirements that will wind up denying food to poor people. The majority of working age people without disabilities who receive SNAP benefits are working or have worked recently. They just happen to work in unstable, low-paying jobs. SNAP benefits help them fill in the gaps between what they earn and the rising cost of groceries. It also frees up more money in their paychecks for housing and medical costs.²

People need food in order to live, work, and learn. SNAP has been shown to improve student performance and improve overall health outcomes. Inflicting more cuts on this program would be immoral, especially since we’re in such economically precarious times and inflation continues to drive up the cost of groceries.
