John, the Pennsylvania Constitution states “elections shall be free and equal.” This is not what free and equal elections look like:

Unequal election policies disenfranchised Pennsylvania voters in 2022 -- Spotlight PA

Republicans in Harrisburg fought tooth and nail against reforms that would guarantee equal access to the freedom to vote in the Commonwealth, and our democracy paid the price.

The unequal restrictions they engineered directly disenfranchised at least 1,599 voters who could have had the chance to cure their ballots at their county board of election offices. At least nine counties refused to have voters fix errors on their mail ballots like a missing date or signature on the outer envelope. Just these nine counties alone have nearly a million registered voters.

As a voting rights organization, the New Pennsylvania Project advocates for the unrestricted freedom of ALL Pennsylvanians to vote. That any of us would not have this freedom is an attack on all of us. Can you chip in $10 today to help us continue educating and engaging voters about the importance of this freedom?

We must engage and educate voters about the many important elections that could restore free and equal elections, particularly this year’s election for a PA Supreme Court Justice.

Many of these restrictions and unequal rights stem from PA’s Supreme Court rulings made in the months after the death of Chief Justice Max Baer, where one more Justice willing to stand up for our voting rights would have made all the difference.

Expanding the electorate and turning out historically disenfranchised voters for this “off-year” election may very well determine the health of PA’s democracy for years to come. Will you donate $10 now to help us stand up for the freedom to vote? We can’t wait around for an election like this.

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
