Team,
I talk a lot about the disease of dark money afflicting the Supreme Court and how we can cure it – and I’d like to take a moment to explain why I think this issue is so important to our nation.
Ever since the Citizens United decision in 2010, a slimy tide of dark money has seeped into our democracy. Millions of dollars in massive checks from anonymous donors helped prop up the SCOTUS nominations of right-wing justices Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett. Once they set foot on the court, they repeatedly threw precedent out the window to rule in favor of right wing donor interests -- likely the same ones who got them on the Court in the first place.
You deserve to know who wrote those checks and what business they’ve had before the Court.
There’s a long road ahead to get this done, but the good news is: There is a remedy.
My Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act will require SCOTUS to be transparent about conflicts of interest – the justices would have to disclose travel and gifts AND the shady groups that lobby the court would finally have to reveal their funders.
And my recently reintroduced DISCLOSE Act would shine the light of transparency on the Court by requiring groups that spend money on ads supporting or opposing judicial nominees to disclose their donors.
I’m hopeful that my legislation will help rid our democracy of the scourge of dark money. But I’m fighting against the most powerful and wealthy special interests out there.
Thanks so much, friend. None of this is possible without your support.
