Republicans are refusing to raise the debt limit, threatening to force America to default on the national debt. The Treasury has already taken extraordinary measures to prevent default, but this recklessness must end.

They’re talking about weakening our country, our economy, and hurting every hardworking American like it’s a normal day at work. Let me tell you, it’s not.

Not even Donald Trump pulled a stunt like this. In fact, during the Trump administration Republicans raised the debt ceiling three times, passed a tax cut that increased the deficit, and added $7.8 trillion to our national debt.

Let me be clear: There is never an appropriate moment to threaten the U.S. economy, and you certainly don’t do it when you could destroy it to get what you want.

When it comes to our tax rates and how we prioritize spending, robust debate and discussion are important -- we should have those arguments all the time. But using the full faith and credit of the United States as leverage in political negotiations is a dangerous game.

I’m going to do everything I can in Congress to make sure Republicans never make good on their threat and to make sure Democrats retake the House in 2024. I hope I can count on you to be there with me, Friend.
