Mark Meckler – one of the ringleaders behind the Article V plot against our constitutional rights – said his end goal is to keep the government out of “education, energy, or healthcare."
Yeah, you read that right. Destroying public schools. Gutting climate regulations. Ending Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. That’s just a taste of the far-right dystopia that awaits us if Meckler and his cronies are allowed to write their extreme agenda into our Constitution.
Let’s be clear: a constitutional convention will only benefit the wealthy donors and corporations spending millions to make it happen.
The rest of us will have to watch in horror as our neighborhoods are polluted, our kids’ schools are defunded, and out-of-pocket healthcare costs continue to skyrocket.
The simple fact is, there are no rules governing an Article V Convention. That means that Meckler and his cronies don’t have to stop at gutting education, environmental regulations, and healthcare. They’ll have a free pass to tear apart every right you and I hold dear.
Shedding first amendment rights and making peaceful protest illegal. Gutting our right to privacy. Rolling back civil rights. All of this is on the table if we don’t stop this power grab in its tracks.
That’s why Common Cause is ramping up our efforts to stop Article V. We’re using our extensive grassroots network to deliver a multi-state response to block and rescind calls for Article V – the kind of response only we can provide.
And, we’re already delivering results: just last week, we STOPPED Montana’s call for a Convention by just a single vote! And before that, we’ve rolled back calls in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada – in addition to stopping nearly 150 new calls for a convention each year in states across the country.
That’s right – the states where Common Cause has successfully rolled back convention calls to date make up the six states our opponents would need to throw our entire country into chaos. This work is absolutely crucial, and we absolutely cannot let up.
But John, I’m worried that if our opponents continue to escalate at this rate, we won’t have enough resources to keep up with all the new calls for Article V. The forces behind Article V have targeted over a dozen states this year – which means if we don’t act immediately, we could lose our most cherished rights before we know it.
We desperately need an infusion of resources to meet this moment and stop all the new calls for Article V. Can I count on you to chip in?
