Friend,
Just fifteen days after an earthquake killed more than 46,000 people in Turkey (officially renamed Türkiye) and Syria, yet another deadly quake has struck the region, killing eight people and injuring hundreds.
Right now, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins San Frontières (MSF) teams are rapidly scaling our response. On February 19, a convoy of 14 trucks packed with tents, winter kits, and medical equipment arrived into Syria all fueled by our generous donor community.
But supplies are running dangerously low. There are few routes into Syria, challenging our ability to deliver aid to families who’ve lost everything. Here’s a report we just received from Hakim Khaldi, Head of Mission for MSF in Syria:
“We emptied our emergency stocks in three days, donating nearly 12 tons (4,000 cubic meters) of surgical equipment, dressing, and medicines to hospitals. Our teams provided support to the health facilities in the area until they were exhausted. But we did not see any help from the outside. Aid is trickling in in negligible amounts for the moment.”
With 180,000 people in Syria now displaced by the earthquake, in addition to the more than two million people already displaced by 12 years of war, and winter temperatures looming, it’s critical for us to deliver more winter kits, living essentials, and tents to families who need them—not to mention providing ongoing medical and mental health care to those affected by the earthquake.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
