Team,
When Elon Musk took over Twitter, he promised to usher in an era of transparency and openness for the social media platform. But for Musk, transparency apparently comes with a price tag.
Twitter recently announced that it would be changing its longstanding policy of providing free access to critical company data to researchers. Now, it will be charging at least $100 a month to use its data pipeline.
Researchers have been using Twitter’s data to study online behavior for years. From tracking hate speech to uncovering Russian disinformation campaigns during the 2016 election, Twitter data has been critical to shaping our understanding of social media. At a time when hate speech and misinformation are only increasing, Elon Musk’s decision could have serious repercussions.
“This move will make it more difficult for researchers to access the information necessary to understand harms on Twitter, including misinformation, foreign influence operations, and more. This is the latest in a series of bad moves from Twitter under Elon Musk’s leadership." – Lori Trahan
