Another earthquake just hit the same region devastated by quakes two weeks ago. UNFPA is on the ground right now helping save lives, but with another earthquake the need is now greater than ever.
This is how 40-year-old Fatma described the earthquake that struck Syria and Türkiye two weeks ago.
And that was even before another 6.3 earthquake hit the region yesterday, bringing about even more damage and death.
Listen, friend: We know that we’ve asked a lot over the past two weeks. And we are so grateful to all our supporters who have stepped up and given emergency gifts to help survivors of the earthquake — like Fatma.
Aren’t sure about the impact of a gift, friend? Read more of Fatma’s story below:
“We survived a war, a terrible thing, but this was something else. The house was shaking left to right, it wasn’t possible to reach the kids. Stones were falling everywhere… It was very scary.”
Fatma was scheduled to give birth four hours after the original earthquake wreaked havoc on Syria and Türkiye. Narrowly escaping buildings that were collapsing around them, Fatma and her family left with nothing and attempted to make it to the hospital. But the hospital was destroyed, surrounded by bodies lying in the street.
“We tried to walk to another hospital, but it was too far, and it was impossible to go by car – the streets were under rubble.”
This is why UNFPA is on the ground now working to bring lifesaving care directly to survivors of the earthquakes. Our mobile teams are taking reproductive health care to women and girls, and we’re also distributing warm clothes, blankets, and emergency supplies to all survivors.
But with another earthquake hitting the region, the need is now greater than ever.
We need to expand our emergency fundraising goal to ensure that we can continue scaling our efforts and saving every life we can.
Your gift will deliver lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care to women and girls in more than 150 countries around the world. Thank you for being there for every woman and girl.
