Hi, A Georgia judge ordered the partial release of a grand jury report into possible 2020 election interference by former President Donald Trump and his allies.1 This could reveal critical information about Trump, his MAGA allies, and where this case is headed. While that plays out, there’s unfinished business related to current elected officials and the attempt to overturn the election results on January 6, 2021. At least two GOP Congressman, Paul Gosar and Derrick Van Orden, may be constitutionally unfit to serve in Congress because of their role in the January 6 insurrection.2 The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is clear: No elected official who previously swore an oath to the Constitution may serve if they "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the U.S. government. Gosar and Van Orden must be investigated immediately. The grand jury in Georgia was convened to investigate “possible attempts to disrupt the lawful administration of the 2020 elections in the State of Georgia and to prepare a report on whether anyone should be prosecuted for such potential crimes.” This could finally lead to some high-level accountability for the insurrection at the Capitol. But no one investigation will lead to full accountability. That’s why we must also investigate sitting elected officials in Congress and state legislatures with connections to the insurrection. Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar intimidated officials responsible for processing the election results, embraced violent alt-right groups and advanced extra-legal efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.3 Beyond Gosar and Van Orden, there are at least five state legislators who must be investigated for their roles in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. One example: North Carolina State Rep. Donnie Loftis, who confirmed that he was at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, wrote in now-deleted social media posts that he “was at the entrance when they breached the door.”4 To protect our democracy and constitution, we must investigate these elected officials to see if their actions related to the January 6 insurrection are directly in conflict with the oath of office. Thanks for taking action, Sources:
