John,
Social Security is the most successful social program in history, having cut poverty among seniors from 50% to 10% -- still too high, but a major improvement over the last 80 years.
Republicans claim they want to “save” Social Security, but their plans range from cuts to privatization to completely abolishing this critical program that keeps millions of seniors out of poverty each year.
In order to actually save Social Security, we need to expand benefits for millions of people and pay for it by finally asking the wealthy to pay their fair share. Now, Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced a bill to do just that.
Sign on as a grassroots co-sponsor of Bernie Sanders’ Social Security Expansion Act of 2023 to increase Social Security benefits, extend the lifespan of the trust fund, and pay for it by having the wealthy finally start paying their fair share.
Bernie’s bill would increase Social Security’s annual benefits by $2,400, increase the Cost of Living Adjustment to better reflect the spending patterns of seniors, and increase the Special Minimum Benefit to help keep low- and no-income workers out of poverty in retirement.
Sen. Sanders’ new bill would also extend the lifespan of the Social Security trust fund by 75 years to keep Social Security’s promise for generations to come. And, it’s completely paid for by finally asking the wealthy to pay more of their fair share into Social Security.
