If you weren’t spending your Saturday following the twists and turns of the Michigan GOP convention, we can’t say we blame you. So today, we thought we’d give you a recap of the drama and results that you may have missed – and what it means for the next two years of elections in Michigan.

Last weekend the Michigan GOP had a convention to decide who would run the party for the next two years.

It wasn’t what you would call a smooth process. Party infighting caused the 2022 failed candidates for Attorney General (Matt DePerno) and Secretary of State (Kristina Karamo) to compete for party chair. Both candidates lost last year by wide margins after spending the election cycle peddling election denial, conspiracy, and division.

While DePerno received President Trump’s endorsement for party chair and Trump’s video was played to the full convention, it was not enough to combat the infighting we saw this weekend. After the third round of votes, Kristina Karamo was ultimately elected.

Immediately after, party insiders began expressing concern that she will not be able to run a statewide party and secure funding from the traditional conservatives that the Michigan GOP typically relies on for donations. While previous chairs of the Michigan GOP came from the donor class, Karamo and her supporters reject the GOP establishment.

Ultimately, both the Trump and establishment wings of the party lost this weekend – and extreme ideology won. We’ll let former Republican state representative Aaron Miller sum it up: “The Republican Party is now pretty well cemented as the party of election denying, conspiracy theorists, tin hats and supporting Capitol riots.”

If last year proved anything, it’s that Michiganders are looking for “Team Normal” – not whatever was displayed at Saturday’s convention. Chip in below to support “Team Normal,” and Elissa, and tell the Michigan GOP that voters just want some sanity.
