John, we need to talk about this.

Extremists, including some of my colleagues in the House, are actively trying to suppress teaching Black history in schools nationwide. And it's not only in the House.

Lawmakers in nearly every state have made some attempt to try and restrict education relating to race, gender, history, and inequality. If anything, these attempts to erase our history present a perfect lesson on why we NEED to keep teaching Black history.

Black history teaches us that the things we fight for daily connect to a continuous struggle for equal rights and justice for all. As the late Congressman John Lewis once reminded us:

"Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part."

Through education and history, we learn what is possible when we come together, build political power, and enact positive change for our communities.

So please, this Black History Month, join me in calling on Congress to defend Black studies and history from these senseless attempts at erasure. Add your name next to mine right away.
