Dear Fellow American,
You probably don’t know, but Hillsdale College settled a legal battle to honor a donor’s wishes when his alma mater failed to abide by their agreement.
You see, this generous donor left money to his alma mater to teach free-market economics and asked Hillsdale to make sure his wishes were honored.
Well, I won’t bore you with the details of the case, but let’s say we had differing interpretations of free-market economics.
The sad truth is, many distinguished colleges began with beautiful missions, many founded along the same lines as Hillsdale. Maybe your alma mater is one of them. But it’s a sad fact that too many of them have departed from their founding missions and are pursuing…something else.
Is it any wonder that, on many college campuses free speech is under threat, as conservative speakers or faculty are harassed or even assaulted!
That’s why I want to hear from you today. What do you think about higher education today? Is your alma mater, or are other schools in your state staying true to their original mission?
And are they doing enough to provide their students with a proper understanding of American history and government—including an understanding of the purposes and principles of the Constitution?
Hillsdale College stands firm, rooted in its original mission, and faithful to the intent of its founders. And in response to the trends I mentioned, we have to do even more to reach and teach millions on behalf of liberty. So, we need your input, to make our work more effective.
That’s why I hope you will please take our brief higher education survey using this secure link:
https://lp.hillsdale.edu/higher-education-survey/
As you may know, we refuse to accept ONE PENNY of government money—not even indirectly in the form of federal or state student grants and loans. We do this precisely to preserve our founding mission. This uncompromising stand frees us from burdensome and corrupting regulations that other colleges must accept (maybe even your alma mater!)
But you should know that this independence comes at a cost, and we must rely on the support of our friends like you to do our work.
So after completing your survey, please consider making a generous tax-deductible gift to help us reach and teach millions more citizens nationwide.
I hope I’m not too presumptuous in saying this…but perhaps you can even spare a few dollars that you were going to give to your alma mater.
Thank you again for your faithful partnership with us and your unwavering support of liberty and education.
Warm regards,
Bill Gray Class of 2001 Associate Vice President of National Donor Outreach Hillsdale College
