Meet Stanley.

Stanley is my rescued pigeon. He’s sitting on my shoulder as I write to you today. 🐩

Stanley really doesn’t need much. Just some yummy food, a safe place to rest, and the touch of a loving hand. (And a bath in my kitchen sink now and then.)

The little things—like trying new foods, stretching out his wings, and forming friendships—mean so much to Stanley. But millions of other birds will never have the chance to enjoy them.

That’s because millions of birds are born on factory farms, doomed to spend their entire lives in a dark cage. Unlike Stanley, they’ll never feel the fresh air or the warm sunlight. Unlike Stanley, they’ll never even stretch out their wings.

That breaks my heart. And it fuels my work for the animals, every single day.

Because sunlight and fresh air shouldn’t be taken away from anyone.

As Director of Corporate Engagement at The Humane League, I’ve grown to realize how much power each and every one of our voices really has. Every day, our team seeks out the most effective strategies to push corporate giants to do better for animals. And what’s the most effective strategy we’ve found? People like you speaking up.

As a changemaker, I can promise you that you’re making a tangible difference for animals. Although it might take some time, companies do listen to compassionate individuals who demand to be heard.

I’ve seen it countless times:

- I’ve seen a high school senior take a box of 50,000 signatures demanding better treatment for chickens to Subway’s HQ—only to be denied entry. She didn’t turn back. Instead, she organized a protest on their doorstep.
- I’ve seen McDonald’s executives ignore our pleas to do better for animals. So we spent weeks outside their HQ, talking to their employees as they got off the commuter bus.
- I’ve seen Aramark, a massive foodservice provider for colleges and other institutions, pressure the city of Philadelphia to remove our billboards calling them out for animal cruelty. So what did we do? We put the same billboards on the sides of semi-trucks and drove them around the city ourselves.

Even though we faced so many challenges, we made progress for animals at every single one of these companies. Subway committed to do better for chickens. McDonald’s pledged to address the cruelest slaughter practices. And Aramark adopted the Better Chicken Commitment. All it took was compassion, creativity, and the courage to never give up.

I know I’m usually in your inbox to talk about hard-hitting campaigns against some of the biggest companies in the world. The truth is, I really do believe that kindness is the most powerful force out there. If you’d seen compassion win over and over again, like I have—I’m sure you’d feel the same way.

Our monthly giving community, The Heart Beat, is a perfect example. Every one of our monthly donors is a compassionate individual who made the choice to take action for a better world. Together, their monthly support allows us to influence the world’s largest companies—holding them accountable to do better for animals

Will you help tip the scales toward compassion?

When you join The Heart Beat right now, your gift—of any size that is comfortable for you!—will be matched for the rest of the year. That means every monthly gift you make before the end of 2023 will go twice as far in ending the abuse of animals raised for food. Will you consider making a monthly gift for the animals. Will you consider making a monthly gift of $for the animals?

And, as one of our most dedicated changemakers—thank you for being a force for kindness. You inspire me every day to keep fighting for the animals. (With Stanley by my side, of course.)

Onward,

Kelly Myers
Director of Corporate Engagement
