Forty-eight years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that guaranteed a woman's right to have an abortion under the Constitution.
The positive effects on women since this historic 1972 decision have been enormous: the lives and health of women and families have improved, economic and education opportunities increased, and as Justice Harry Blackmun, the author of Roe, put it, this decision was a critical step "toward the full emancipation of women.”
But women's reproductive freedom remains under constant threat. Extremist lawmakers in the federal government are trying to defund health centers that provide abortion services. States across the country are enacting some of the most restrictive laws to control women's bodies. And the Supreme Court now contains a majority of anti-abortion justices sitting on the bench.
Here at CREDO, we're committed to standing up for women and their right to control their own bodies. Over the last 30 years, we've donated over $10 million to groups fighting for women's rights, like UltraViolet, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. And we're proud to be one of Planned Parenthood's largest corporate donors.
