Preserving American Freedom through Knowledge

John

Happy Presidents' Day! I would like to share with you a few pieces we've recently published, including one I wrote in honor of George Washington and his inspiring vision for preserving American freedom through knowledge. Scroll down to take a look.

The Jack Miller Center, including Jack Miller himself, is making the case for civic renewal to the public at events, on the radio, and in the news. President
Think Like George Washington

Presidents' Day is a chance to remember the great statesmen who founded and preserved our republic, especially George Washington. In American Purpose, JMC president Hans Zeiger takes a look at what Washington said about the role of civic education in a free society. Even though Washington was a man of action, he was also a great thinker.

Washington believed that all Americans should be thinking citizens. To live up to Washington’s ideals, Hans argues, we need to revitalize civic education.

"The principles of the American Founding are not artifacts of the past. And they are not mere abstractions,” Hans writes. "In the self-evident truths Washington fought for, we can find a practical guide to how we relate to one another, how we find our place in the world, and how we govern ourselves in the 21st century."

Civics must not further polarize America
Thomas Kelly, The Hill ([link removed])

In his most recent op-ed, JMC Vice President of Civics Initiatives Thomas Kelly points out civics practitioners and parents are not on the same page Even attempts at bipartisan efforts generate significant backlash. He argues that education officials need to be talking with the parents and the larger public about civic education rather than talking past them.

“Partisans sometimes try to drive a wedge between parents and schools for political gain,” Tom warns. “We must resist the temptation to turn classrooms into political battlegrounds… If civics is going to reduce polarization, state officials and civics professionals must promote instruction that our nation’s parents can get behind.”

College For Some, Not All Jack Miller, RealClear Education ([link removed])

Jack Miller, the founder of JMC and the chairman of the board, says that there’s a big problem with education in America. We need to rethink the high-cost, one-size-fits-all four-year model as the primary means to success. Simply put, "stop pushing everyone to go to college."

"Few have asked, 'is this path best for all young people, and is it best for our country?,'" Jack writes. He says that we need to remind "ourselves that the vast majority of young people get most of their education in the K-12 system."

Jack points to skilled craftsmen and the valuable, productive, and rewarding work they do – in many cases, more rewarding than their white collar counterparts.

Our schools should teach the basics well and promote a variety of educational opportunities to students, including trade schooling and apprenticeships, as viable and respectable options for success. And at all levels, they should be preparing our students for good citizenship.

Invest in Your Children's Freedom
“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people.”
— John Adams
Our children are not getting the general knowledge and understanding about our country and what makes it “the land of the free.”

The Jack Miller Center exists to ensure sure our students learn the history and values of self-government and the freedom it gives each of them to achieve their dreams.
We are a growing national network of scholars and teachers who seek to preserve the American political tradition. We've already reached 1.65 million students from K-12 through college. With your support, we can reach tens of millions more.
Please, join us in the effort. Help grow our network of dedicated college educators. Give K-12 teachers the knowledge, content, and resources they need. Help us restore civic education grounded in America's founding principles and history.

Your donation, large or small, will be a crucial investment in the future of our country. This will be one of the most important inheritances you leave your children, your grandchildren, and their children.

About the Jack Miller Center
The Jack Miller Center is a nationwide network of scholars and teachers committed to educating the next generation about the foundational texts and ideas of the American political tradition.

We have three strategies to pursue this mission:
1. build and sustain a community of scholars in the fields of American political thought and history;
2. restore the teaching of American citizenship in K-12 schools that centers on the country’s history, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and other foundational texts in the American tradition; and
3. partner with organizations and philanthropists to advance civic education that is grounded in America’s founding principles and history.

We are building a movement of educators and citizens to advance the principles of equality, liberty, and opportunity that lie at the heart of the American political tradition.
