Folks,

Today we’re celebrating Presidents’ Day, and although this day mostly
celebrates the leadership and accomplishments of George Washington and Abraham
Lincoln, there are many other American Presidents worth celebrating.

One thing that most of these great men have in common is that they sacrificed
something or made the difficult choice in the face of great odds to do what was
right for the country. George Washington deciding to step down and allow the
nation to democratically elect his successor set our country on a course of
democracy that has withstood the test of time.

Abraham Lincoln fought a bloody civil war that nearly destroyed the country
and issued the Emancipation Proclamation to try to bring us closer to that
American truth that all men are created equal and that no human being could
ever again be the property of another.

Other presidents have faced hardships, perhaps not as dire as the entire
future of the nation or a civil war, but they’ve faced their own kinds of
important choices. Barack Obama knew passing the Affordable Care Act could
result in a backlash at the polls during the midterms. But instead of backing
down in the face of political and electoral consequences, he persevered because
he knew delivering health care to millions of Americans was the right thing to
do.

Doing the right thing in the face of adversity, thinking of the nation rather
than yourself, and being committed to the future of our democracy are qualities
we should seek in all of our leaders. And today, we’re proud to celebrate
Presidents’ Day with you.

On behalf of the Montana Democratic Party, have a wonderful day.
