Presidents' Day calls on us to reflect on our first president, our nation’s founding, and our nation’s values.

In a letter to James Lloyd in 1799, George Washington wrote, “The great mass of our Citizens require only to understand matters rightly, to form right decisions.” Central to the George Washington Initiative’s mission is the resolve to defend truth and democracy, and Washington’s words continue to be a guiding force in our work.

As dis- and misinformation threaten to uproot the core values of our democracy, we must remain committed to challenging bad-faith actors. We are likely to see more waves of disinformation, but just as people created these ecosystems, people can be the solution.

I hope you will join the George Washington Initiative in our efforts to dismantle dis- and misinformation and defend our democracy.
