There’s no sugar-coating it—the future of our democracy is at risk! Some U.S. Senators are trying to skirt the democratic process during President Trump’s impeachment trial and skip right to a conclusion WITHOUT hearing witness testimony or reviewing relevant documents. In fact, an initial vote happened today, denying witnesses and documents, but all is not lost! We expect that there will be additional votes on this issue in the future so your voice is needed. [1]

You can help protect our democracy! U.S. Senators need to hear from us, so we're stopping by key offices on Thursday to deliver cupcakes, petition signatures, and a letter about the importance of a fair impeachment trial.

Why cupcakes? Delivering cupcakes along with a letter reminding U.S. Senators that protecting our democracy should be a piece of cake for them (because being an impartial juror is part of their job) will send a strong, innovative, and memorable message. (Studies show that humor is an effective way to overcome a partisan mindset.) [2] It will show them that their constituents want them to uphold the Constitution.

Here are the details:

• Who: Moms, dads, kids, and concerned people… anyone who thinks witness testimony and documentary evidence are key ingredients for a fair impeachment trial! (Kids of all ages are welcome.)
• When: Thursday, January 23rd at 3:00pm
• Where: In front of the HUGE black mountain sculpture in the lobby of the Hart Senate Office Building (Constitution Ave. between 1st and 2nd NE) 
• What: We'll deliver cupcakes, petition signatures, and a letter to key U.S. Senators to tell them, "Don’t frost the American people. Bake in democracy now!" Please wear your MomsRising t-shirt if you have one and feel free to invite friends, families, or neighbors….the more the merrier!!

Why now? This week, the U.S. Senate trial of President Trump’s impeachment begins, and Senators will take more votes on whether to allow testimony from key witnesses and to review relevant documents—BOTH are key ingredients for a fair trial! Senators needs to understand that being an impartial juror is baked right into the Constitution. It’s time for Senators to do their job and stand up for a fair trial—the American people deserve it!

It’s critically important that we send a strong message now. Some Republicans in the U.S. Senate have a half-baked plan for a sham trial without the necessary ingredients of witness testimony and documentary evidence. We have to protect our democracy and demand all our Senators be impartial jurors and have all necessary evidence to make this paramount decision! It’s time to take innovative action.
