A Brief History

In the 1800s, February 22nd was annually celebrated as George Washington's Birthday
[link removed] in many localities throughout America.

Interestingly, black hero Lemuel Haynes is tied to Washington's Birthday celebrations. Haynes was a Minuteman
[link removed] in the War for Independence and participated in the expedition against Fort Ticonderoga. After becoming a minister in 1785, he preached for both
[link removed] all-white and mixed congregations. About 40 years after his participation in the War, Haynes preached a sermon on Washington's Birthday, noting
[link removed] :

Perhaps it is not ostentatious [bragging] in the speaker to observe that in early life he devoted all for the sake of freedom and independence, and endured frequent campaigns in their defense, and has never viewed the sacrifice too great.

An official federal holiday recognizing Washington's Birthday was declared in 1879. In 1968, a Congressional Act was passed that moved the celebration
[link removed] of Washington's Birthday to the third Monday in February. This holiday is now called Presidents Day and celebrates all of America's presidents.
