Psychosocial support is an essential part of any treatment plan

Dear there,
Living with a chronic health condition impacts both body and mind—something that many of those reading this email might be able to sympathize with.
Fifteen-year-old Mary experienced seizures growing up in Liberia, physically exhausting her and making her the target of bullying that forced her to drop out of school. Eventually, she stopped leaving her house, choosing instead to watch the world pass her by from her bedroom window.
Stories like Mary’s are why Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has made mental health care an essential part of our treatment plan for chronic illnesses—whether we’re spreading awareness about epilepsy to fight stigma or helping a diabetes patient stay positive during treatment.
With MSF’s help, Mary is seizure-free, back in school, and preparing for a brighter future:
“I want to become a medical doctor, to be helping people, because I love them—that's how I want to be.” – Mary
Mary is enrolled in the epilepsy treatment program MSF runs in partnership with the Liberian Ministry of Health in Monrovia. Through this program, Mary receives clinical treatment and psychoeducation. The program also hosts awareness sessions in Mary’s community to break the stigma around her condition.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
