John,

48,830 people were killed by guns in 2021–an average of 133 people every single day. That’s according to the CDC, which just released its final data for the year. The total number of gun deaths represented an 8 percent increase from 2020, which previously held the record for the deadliest year of gun violence.

Among the victims were people no different than you or me. They were teachers and grocery store shoppers. Students and children. Loved ones and innocent bystanders. All of whom taken far too soon.

And while none of us is immune to the impacts of gun violence, we know that it disproportionately affects communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and children. Black Americans experience 10 times the gun homicides and 18 times the gun assault injuries. Queer folks are more than twice as likely to be victims of gun violence. And in 2020, firearms became the leading cause of death for children.

We see headlines of public shootings flood our newsfeeds and videos of toddlers accessing unlocked and loaded guns trend on social media. But we know this does not have to remain our normal. We hear thoughts and prayers but we need policy and change.

And this is why our 2023 Legislative Agenda is our boldest yet. It reflects the urgent need for Washington to continue leading the way in adopting innovative policies to prevent senseless gun violence. We are determined to ban the sale of military-style assault rifles, require a permit, safety training, and waiting period to purchase a gun, and more. We are determined to pass these policies because lives depend on them.

Our lifesaving work could not happen without you and your continued support. Please know we are grateful for all of you!
