When I moved into my grandparents house, I shared one bed and one room with my brother. I was frustrated and I questioned: Was there truly an opportunity for a kid like me born on the wrong side of the tracks? Would I ever amount to anything?


I thought the answer was no &ndash; no chance, no opportunity, no hope.

I couldn&rsquo;t have been more wrong.


I still believe in the American Dream because I lived it. My family went from cotton to Congress in one lifetime and that&rsquo;s why, on Thursday, I kicked off my Faith in America listening tour in my home state of South Carolina.

America is the land of opportunity, which is why I&rsquo;m hoping you&rsquo;ll join me in my mission to restore the American Dream and spread opportunity to all Americans!


There are people who want to spread the cancer of hopelessness through our nation, but it goes against the very foundation on which our country was built. With the right opportunities, there&rsquo;s no end to what we can achieve in America. But we don&rsquo;t have to wait for opportunity to knock, we can work every day to make our own opportunities.


My mom worked 16 hour days to keep the lights on, the phone connected and food in the fridge.


My grandfather never learned how to read but he would sit at the kitchen table thumbing through the paper to demonstrate to my brother and me the importance of knowledge.


We can&rsquo;t give up the fight for our future, John. It will take hard work, education, and most importantly faith, but I&rsquo;m not giving up and I pray neither are you.

I believe the new American century starts HERE. It starts NOW. And it starts with YOU.
