Just last week, Texas House Speaker announced the committee assignments for the 88th legislative session.
Guess what?!
There are less democrats on committees this session than there were during the last session!
This is because of all the hard work grassroots activists have done to put pressure on our elected employees. Without your work at the State Convention in June, your phone calls, post cards, and dedication to our principles over the last few months, this would never have happened.
“But Fran, there are still NINE democrats who hold committee chairmanships in the House!”
While this is true, we did send a powerful message to Speaker Phelan with our post card campaign, our phone calls, and our activists in red shirts showing up at the Capitol. Our efforts prevented radical democrats from being placed on powerful committees such as the Public Education or Pensions and Investments committees. If democrats held positions of power on the Public Education Committee, none of our bills to end the sexualization of kids in schools would pass.
Now, we all know just because Republicans have the chairmanship, the fight is not over. We MUST hold our elected Republican officials accountable to the Republican voters who elected them. No excuses. Real reform must be passed through all committees.
With your continued support and activism there will be a day when Texas has NO democrat chairmanships.
