A few days ago, I let you know about the plan by right-wing state Supreme Court justices to reopen cases that have already been decided.
It’s clear that folks like you are just as appalled by this reversal of precedent as I am. Reversing decisions when new justices are elected is antithetical to the idea of an independent judicial system. Our Court is supposed to work as a check and balance to the other branches of government. Instead, these right-wing justices appear prepared to do the bidding of Republican legislative leaders.
By reopening critical cases whose decisions struck down Republicans' anti-voter legislation and ultra-gerrymandered legislative district maps, the Court’s right-wing justices are essentially pledging loyalty to the GOP.
This is just the first step in the Republican plans to undermine our state constitution and create a subservient judiciary. And if the Court’s new decisions favor the GOP (which we must assume they will), we’ll have an even harder time reigning in Republican extremism.
