Almost nine years ago, John,, Samaria Rice tragically lost her son Tamir when he was murdered by Cleveland Police.
The pain and hardship caused by all too many innocent deaths at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve are all too familiar to us. And the loss of so many has not left the forefront of my mind, nor the minds of my Democratic colleagues as we fight for police reform through community-based solutions.
I had the honor of inviting Ms. Rice to President Biden's State of the Union along with 15 other families who have been wronged by this police brutality pandemic. Democrats stood united for these families and countless others as President Biden laid out actions to make our communities safe and restore trust in our police.
Regardless of state or politics, bad policing exists throughout our Black and Brown communities nationwide, and we must act. I'll keep fighting every day to ensure Tamir's death and the deaths of so many others are not in vain, and I pray these families can find solace in their loss.
Gratefully at your service,
Shontel Brown
