John,
Today is the 10th anniversary of the terrible Citizens United Supreme Court decision that unleashed unlimited toxic campaign cash into our elections.
Mitch McConnell and Trump love Citizens United because their wealthy megadonors can spend ENDLESSLY to keep them in office.
After ten years, the damage is clear.
In that time, the top 10 donors alone have given a whopping $1.2 billion to influence elections. Corporations are fueling dark money groups. And running for office is getting more and more expensive.
John, this is how corporate dark money is contaminating our democracy.According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the decade after Citizens United has been the most expensive decade in American politics ever:
“Independent groups spent billions to influence crucial races, supplanting political parties and morphing into extensions of candidate campaigns. Wealthy donors flexed their expanded political power by injecting unprecedented sums into elections. And transparency eroded as ‘dark money’ groups, keeping their sources of funding secret, emerged as political powerhouses.”
It’s why Trump got elected.
It’s why Republicans control the Senate and Mitch McConnell is Majority Leader.
It’s preventing progress on gun control, the environment, healthcare, and all the issues we care about.
But the Democracy for All Amendment currently has 209 cosponsors in the House of Representatives!
Thank you for all you do,
The HAZMAT America Team
