Republicans are so desperate to distract the American people from the GOP’s inability to govern or address actual issues, that they instead attack women of color in power.

This month, Republicans banned my colleague Ilhan Omar from serving on the House Foreign Affairs committee. As a Muslim refugee and child survivor of war, Ilhan’s lived experience brings needed perspective to this committee.

But, my Republican colleagues would rather fear monger and weaponize hate―hate that puts all Muslims at risk.

Rep. Omar and I are proud to serve as role models to people of marginalized backgrounds. It is powerful and important for our communities to be part of crafting the policies that will lead our country forward. But there’s a backlash to our work to build an inclusive future.
