We cannot continue letting corporations side-step environmental regulations and protections
John, there’s an environmental crisis happening in real time.
As you may have heard, East Palestine residents had to evacuate their town in Ohio after a Norfolk Southern train containing carcinogenic chemicals derailed, causing toxic chemicals to leach into the air and pollute nearby streams.
The EPA and elected officials have already begun looking into the incident, but one thing is immediately clear: We cannot continue letting corporations side-step environmental regulations and protections — and our SEEC Members are working in Congress to hold these companies accountable.
Because the cargo on the train wasn’t considered “high-hazardous material," Norfolk Southern wasn’t required to notify the state of the train’s contents. Now, the people of East Palestine and surrounding communities will face the consequences far into the future.
This was entirely preventable, John. But because our Republican majority in the House is more concerned with helping corporations over working Americans, Norfolk Southern was legally allowed to skirt around environmental safeguards. That’s why we need our SEEC Members to continue fighting for climate protections and take back the House in 2024.
We cannot and will not let environmental disasters like these become our new normal, John. With your help, we can make sure what happened in East Palestine never happens to another community.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
