Dear friend,
You did it! The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced last Thursday, January 16, that it would be opening an investigation into the Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman.
I want to be clear: This happened because of you, friends.
With thousands of others, you signed our petition and used the hotline we set up to call the DOJ and make your voices heard. The result of all those calls? The announcement of DOJ's investigation into terrible conditions and activities at Parchman.
Our fight for prison reform in Mississippi is not over. While Parchman will be investigated, we believe it ultimately should be closed. We also know that the conditions there are not exclusive to Parchman, and we hope the DOJ will use this opportunity to investigate all Mississippi prisons.
But the DOJ investigation is still an important victory, and a testament to the power of our collective voice. So, with all my heart, thank you, friends, for your advocacy.
Thank you,
Kevin Ring President, FAMM
