Hi John,
There was a documentary on Channel 4 this week I think you’d like to see. The Billionaires Who Made Our World: Bill Gates looked at Bill Gates’s role in protecting big pharma during the pandemic, as well as the wider record of his foundation in addressing poverty around the world.
As our director Nick Dearden told the programme, rather than backing a patent waiver on Covid medicines, Bill Gates instead used his immense power to set up a scheme which promised to provide the whole world with vaccines. The scheme failed, because rather than challenging Big Pharma’s power, it cemented it, resulting in massive vaccine inequality.
The programme includes a contribution from activists and NGOs from Kenya, campaigning to stop the Gates Foundation damaging their livelihoods by promoting agribusiness ‘solutions’ to food production.
It’s available to watch on catch-up on the Channel 4 website. Or you can watch and share a clip of our director, Nick Dearden, on our Twitter feed.

The programme also looked at how Gates was prosecuted by US authorities for monopolistic practices when he ran Microsoft - in one of the all too rare examples of regulators intervening against this type of behaviour.
That’s exactly the theme of our upcoming conference, Resisting Monopoly Capitalism, on 25 March in London ([link removed]) .
In this conference, we will discuss and unpack what monopoly capitalism is, how it creates inequality and injustice, and explore ways to fight back and organise for a different world.

It’s thanks to your support that we can challenge the story Gates and other billionaires like to tell about the way to end poverty - which just happens to coincide with the way they made their billions. Together we are showing that we need justice not philanthropy.
Thanks
Jonathan Stevenson
