Census History: Harriet Tubman [ [link removed] ]
On February 1, 1978, Harriet Tubman became the first African American woman featured on a U.S. postage stamp.
Tubman was an abolitionist, nurse, and spy. Following her escape from slavery in 1849, she made many dangerous trips into southern slave-owning states to lead others to freedom using a system of escape routes and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
