Hi Friend, There are two types of people in this world – people who sit on the sidelines and watch, and people who jump into the arena and do. At Team No Labels, we are Type-A doers all the way. Don’t get me wrong – there are plenty of times when we’re content to sit back and enjoy the show. We were among the 113 million people who were glued to the Super Bowl last Sunday. We can binge watch a couple of seasons of the latest Netflix show like everyone else. And, we are already looking forward to gazing at the next round of summer sunsets. But when it comes to serious work, like the debt ceiling face-off in D.C., we can’t just sit and watch the trainwreck. When the stakes are this high, we are all about rolling up our sleeves, jumping into the fray, and getting things done. No Labels needs to lead the way because too many people, including those in Congress and the White House, appear to be content to sit and watch the stalemate mummify into place, putting the nation on a dangerous trajectory. We are headed now (at a minimum) towards spooking the markets — and potentially to an actual, unprecedented default on the full faith and credit of the United States of America, which would devastate our national economy and the finances of millions of families. If the stakes of economic calamity are so high, why are the most powerful people in our government paralyzed, sitting around watching and waiting? It’s because of all the dynamics in our politics with which we all are so familiar. The extremes in both parties have a stranglehold over their supposed leaders, warning them implicitly and explicitly not to give an inch, not to compromise, not to be seen even speaking with “the enemy.” As a result, no one wants to grab the steering wheel as we all barrel towards the fiscal cliff. Someone needs to be the adult in the room and say: “Enough games -- It’s time to get to work.” So, the No Labels movement is launching a nationwide effort to turn the watchers into doers, to get President Biden, Speaker McCarthy, House Minority Leader Jeffries, and Senate Leaders Schumer and McConnell to stop the delay and get down to business. Democrats are right – the United States needs to live up to its previous spending obligations and raise the debt ceiling without doing harm to our economy. The Republicans are right that we can’t keep pushing back grappling with our dangerous debt and annual deficits. We need our leaders to come up with a bipartisan deal that addresses both of those imperatives. No Labels is doing this to get our government to do what is right. Our effort is going to require advertising, grassroots mobilization, and aggressive communications – and for all that, we need your help, including with funding. If you believe in what we are doing and are able, please give to No Labels 2024. |
