Friday, February 17, 2023 | The Latest Research, Commentary, And News
From Health Affairs

Dear John,

In case you missed it, William Frist, one of the cochairs of the Health
Affairs Council on Health Care Spending and Value
<[link removed]>,
published an article in Forbes discussing administrative waste and
inefficiencies
<[link removed]>
in US health care spending.

Frist's article is the first in a four-part series on the Health Affairs
Council on Health Care Spending and Value's newly released report, "A
Road Map for Action
<[link removed]>."

Opioid Use Disorder

In their newest Health Affairs article, Lori Uscher-Pines and coauthors
explore recent trends in the use of telemedicine to address opioid use
disorder (OUD)
<[link removed]>.

More than three-quarters of clinicians treating OUD report the use of
one or more digital equity strategies designed to address barriers
patients may have to using telemedicine, with about one-third offering
real-time technical assistance and more than 15 percent supplying
patients with electronic devices if they do not have them.

The authors emphasize that more evidence is needed to determine the most
effective strategies in treating OUD. Uscher-Pines and coauthors also
call for more resources and training as well as guidance on the roles
and responsibilities of clinicians versus other stakeholders in helping
patients obtain video visits.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs

In Health Affairs Forefront, Kristen Azar and colleagues write about the
Area Deprivation Index (ADI). The ADI has been a useful tool for many
research efforts, and it offers several advantages including
accessibility, timeliness, and ease of use.

This article is the latest in the Arnold Ventures' supported series,
Accountable Care for Population Health
<[link removed]>,
featuring analysis and discussion of how to understand, design, support,
and measure patient-centered, cost-efficient care under the umbrella of
accountable care.
