John,
After Roe v. Wade was overturned last year, Wisconsinites were left with the oldest abortion ban in the nation. How old? The antiquated law is from nearly 174 years ago and dates all the way back to March 1849.
We just finished compiling a list of things that are younger than our state’s abortion ban – and the results might surprise you.
Wisconsinites are tired of our rights being limited by these antiquated views. That’s why Women Win WI is fighting to elect pro-choice champions across our state this spring. Can you chip in just $18.49 today to show the GOP that folks across our state support abortion access? [[link removed]]

Here are 5 things that came out after Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban :
1. Sliced bread - 1928 🍞 This American staple was first sold in 1928 and advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped." At least sliced bread hasn’t taken any steps backward since then.
2. The first automobile - 1886 🚗 The first cars were made by German inventor Carl Benz in 1886 and became widely available during the 20th century. Can you imagine still trying to get to work in the snow in a horse and buggy?
3. Chocolate chip cookies - 1938 🍪 Chocolate chip cookies were invented by American chefs Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides in 1938 – we hope the WI GOP doesn’t try to get these banned anytime soon.
4. 20 U.S. States - 1850-1959 🗺️ (Gov. Evers actually found this one for us.) After he called for a special session to address our abortion law in June 2022, Gov. Evers’ Press Secretary Kayla Anderson shared that “Wisconsin’s abortion ban is so archaic, it’s older than nearly half of the states in the U.S.”
5. Handwashing - 1870s-1980s 🧼 Surgeons began regularly washing up in the 1870s, but the importance of everyday handwashing did not become universal hygiene until the 1980s. Can you believe ‘wash your hands’ was once controversial medical advice?
John, Republicans want to keep Wisconsinites stuck in their outdated views from 1849. We need a strong grassroots coalition of support to bring us all back to the present. Will you make a contribution of $18.49 today to get rid of our 1849 abortion ban for good? [[link removed]]

With the future of our democracy and reproductive freedom at stake, former Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski launched an initiative building on the power of pro-choice women.
The fall of Roe v. Wade reinstated Wisconsin’s cruel abortion ban from 1849 that provides no exceptions for rape or incest and could jail or fine doctors. But we know the right-wing won’t stop there. Governor Evers has already vetoed nine anti-abortion bills that passed the GOP-controlled legislature, and when he called for a special special to repeal the 1849 law, Republicans gaveled in and out in less than a minute.
At Women Win Wisconsin, we believe the key to stopping the GOP is to activate the overwhelming majority of voters who support reproductive freedom. A recent Marquette University Law School poll showed 80% of Wisconsin voters are concerned with the change in abortion policy now that abortion is illegal in the state. These voters can make the difference in Wisconsin races that are often decided by only a few hundred votes.
Women Win Wisconsin will make sure pro-choice voters know exactly who’s going to fight for their reproductive rights and freedoms. We back pro-choice women running in Wisconsin’s most competitive races, and we’re excited to support Democratic victories up and down the ballot.
There are critical spring elections on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 and Tuesday, April 4, 2023.
