Hi John,
We need to talk about gun violence today. We need to talk about it
every day, because every day, on average, 321 people are killed by guns in this country.
We cannot and will not accept this reality as normal or inevitable.
And we don't have to wait for Congress, the Senate, or the Supreme Court to act.
State and local elected officials have the power to curb gun violence. They can close background check loopholes, ban the sale of assault weapons in their state, create buy-back programs to get guns off the streets, institute safety zones, and more.
Laws like these save lives — but we need more local elected officials in every community ready at the helm to enact them. That's exactly where you come in.
If you're outraged and heartbroken by gun violence in this country, we need you. Learn more about how to Run for Something and put an end to gun violence in your community and in this country >>
There is always hope. In the 25 years between Congressional action on gun safety,
hundreds of bills have been passed at the state and local levels. And more than a few have come from Run for Something Alums:
In South Carolina, Columbia City Councilmember Aditi Bussells led the charge to pass the first law in her state to require residents to report a lost or stolen gun within 24 hours.
After the Supreme Court gutted centuries-old gun regulations in New York, state Senator Andrew Gounardes rallied to immediately pass legislation limiting access to assault rifles and tightening red flag laws to combat gun violence.
Right now, gun violence survivor and RFS candidate Keenon James is running for Maryland’s state House to continue his work of twenty years building safer communities.
There is always hope, but we can't wait for change to happen. We have to step up and be the change. If you're a diverse young progressive who cares about common-sense gun reform, we need you in office.
Thank you
