The judges have voted, and the 2023 Conservative Book of the Year Award goes to . . .

The Statesman as Thinker: Portraits of Greatness, Courage, and Moderation (Encounter Books) by longtime ISI professor, Dr. Daniel J. Mahoney.

Dan is a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, senior writer at Law and Liberty, and professor emeritus at Assumption University.

2022 award winner Victor Davis Hanson praised Mahoney for his "timely tribute to history’s rare ‘great-souled’ leaders whose broad learning and moral ethos were . . . at the heart of their mastery of politics," calling the book a "brilliantly written and researched tribute to the pantheon of classically trained and thinking men of action."

The Statesman as Thinker prevailed in an impressive field of finalists.

The runner-up to this year’s Conservative Book of the Year Award is Samuel Gregg’s The Next American Economy: Nation, State, and Markets in an Uncertain World (Encounter Books).

I sincerely hope you will come to hear Dan speak about his timely and important book at ISI’s Conservative Book of the Year Award Dinner on Friday, June 2nd, at the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. You can purchase tickets at this link.

The Conservative Book of the Year Award Dinner will kick off ISI’s Homecoming Weekend. The theme of this year’s event is "The Next Great American." Confirmed speakers include H.W. Brands, Dana Gioia, Lee Edwards, Robert Merry, and many more.
