This month: watch MediaJustice's web series and find out who won TOA bowling

Who's the Best Bowler at TOA?

One of the things we’re known for is creating space to incubate ideas that lead to culture and narrative change. If you’ve come to our work through the Creative Change Retreat or Communications Institute, you know the uniquely generative experience of working in community with other organizers, advocates, artists, and cultural strategists.

Internally, we need those spaces too.

As our staff grows, so does our commitment to learning from one another and stretching our collective imaginations for what our country could and should be. Check out highlights from our 2023 TOA Staff Kick-off retreat. And as you develop and refine your own narrative strategies for the year, make sure your workplans include time for play, reflection, and visioning.

Oh, and it turns out Julie Fisher-Rowe is as good at knocking down pins as she is at countering dominant narratives, but we’re more of a celebrate our team kind of crowd.

Our Kids Will Read Black, Queer History

Building narrative power is essential to overcoming opposition narratives. Nowhere is this more apparent than the sustained cultural attack on critical race theory. The fallout from Gov. DeSantis’ bullying of AP African American curriculum shows the profound gains conservative movements achieve when we struggle to respond. Our messaging memo can help you voice support for honest and inclusive education with affirmative messaging rooted in shared values.

Editorial Calendar: March 2023

Our editorial calendar is now live! In addition to Women’s History Month, March includes Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, National Farmworker Awareness Week, and International Transgender Day of Visibility. The Academy Awards and the SXSW Festival are around the corner, as well as the birthdays of Aretha Franklin, Bayard Rustin, and Cesar Chavez. Visit our calendars for messaging tips and resources to respond to these and other upcoming media hooks.

Culture Corner: Watch Season 2 Now!

MediaJustice is back with another season of “That’s So Black,” and we couldn’t be more excited to tune in! From 90’s Nostalgia to Phonk Music, weekly episodes dig into the many ways Black culture shapes how we communicate and build community with one another.

Social media can be a powerful tool to spotlight the work of Black artists or organize people around liberation. But at its roots, the profit-driven interests of capitalist media platforms continue to reduce our online communities into spaces where white supremacist narratives, cultural appropriation, and the exploitation of Black people thrive.

Hosted by Eteng Ettah and produced by Ophelia Overton of MediaJustice, “That’s So Black” is a model for cultural strategies that leverage our new media environment to educate audiences, advance liberatory narratives, and have fun while you do it. Celebrate Black History Month by subscribing to their YouTube channel and make sure to catch upcoming episodes on Gaming and Reality TV.
