Dear MoveOn member,
Monday's mass shooting at Michigan State University—which left three students dead and five critically injured—was the 67th mass shooting this year. On Monday, we were only 45 days into 2023.1
Students at Michigan State have now lived through multiple mass shootings at their schools. Some students attended nearby Oxford High School, where a mass shooting in 2021 left four students dead. And some had even attended Sandy Hook Elementary School at the time of the 2012 massacre there.2
In a TikTok video, a Michigan State student who also survived the Sandy Hook shooting said it was "incomprehensible" to have lived through two mass shootings in her 21 years.3
In the video, she said, "We can no longer just provide love and prayers. It needs to be legislation. It needs to be action."4
But there won't be action for one reason and one reason only: because the GOP is utterly unwilling. Instead, Republicans in Congress are wearing assault weapon pins on their lapels and spent 2022 trying to outdo each other with campaign ads filled with military-style assault weapons that glorify the use and ownership of guns.5,6
That's why MoveOn has printed a huge batch of these "GOP: Guns Over People" stickers—and we’re giving them away for free, while supplies last.

Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of the Parkland shooting, which left 17 dead and 17 injured.7
Children in the United States are far more likely to die from gun violence than in any other high-income country.8
And guns are now the leading cause of death among young people in the United States.9
John, we know how to solve this problem. Strict gun laws work. They've worked in U.S. states that have imposed them.10 And they've worked in countries around the globe.11
And polls show that most U.S. voters, regardless of their political party, want Congress to pass stricter gun laws.12
But GOP lawmakers will say and do anything to protect guns and the gun lobby that lines their pockets.
We don't have to tolerate the horror and death. We can join Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, and other countries that all had cultures of gun ownership, all tightened gun restrictions, and all saw their levels of gun violence plummet.13
But it's only going to happen if we join together and build and sustain the movement to end the epidemic of gun violence in America.
Thanks for all you do.
