On the 14th, Moms 4 Housing, a group of a few homeless mothers who were squatting in property that has been sitting vacant for years, was arrested and evicted. Their saga highlights so many important issues: homelessness, that 16 million houses and apartments across this country are owned by shell corporations and are sitting vacant and the militarization of our police departments, as the response to three or four unarmed women was an extremely dramatic one. If you read these emails regularly, you know that I have talked extensively about all of these problems. The Moms had tried to purchase the house, but the shell corporation that owned it refused to sell it to them. It was announced yesterday, however, that the corporation has come to an agreement with the Moms. That is wonderful news for the Moms involved, but it doesn't mean that those problems have gone anywhere. We've got a lot of work to do.

On November 10, 2019 in Vallejo (5 minutes from my house) Eric Reason was shot in the back of the head as he ran away from an off-duty Richmond police officer. The surveillance footage of the event has not been released to the public. Very little information has been given at all. VPD released a statement that made it seem like Reason pulled a gun over a parking space and died in a gun battle, which was false. He was shot in the back of the head, fleeing. Also, the Vallejo Police Department allowed this officer to take photos of the body.

VPD regularly takes a year to send investigations of police shootings over to the DA. A civil rights lawyer told Justice Coalition Of Vallejo last month that Vallejo takes an unusually long time, regularly, to send such investigations to the DA's office.

On January 14, the family of Eric Reason and Justice Coalition Of Vallejo went to the Vallejo City Council seeking justice. We gave a list of very reasonable demands:

1) Release the surveillance video.
2) Discipline the officers that allowed a killer to photograph, and possibly corrupt, the crime scene.
3) Commit to a timeline for submitting the investigation to the DA.
4) Implement a new policy that ensures that VPD communicate information to families that have lost loved ones.
5) Immediately cease plans to build a new multi-million dollar waterfront police facility.
6) Quit issuing intentionally misleading press releases.

On January 15, I went to the Vallejo School Board meeting to try to get the Indigenous studies classes relocated, rather than ended. The temporary buildings are dilapidated and due for destruction. If this is important to you, you can email the board and ask them to relocate the classes and save the artifacts. A group of socialist and democratic socialist candidates have joined up to form the Rose Caucus to combine our efforts, mutually endorse each other, and show the people that there are many of us. Our campaign has now been endorsed by over 50 progressive candidates across the country.

I created this graphic to demonstrate how much of our district 5 tax dollars go toward military spending. Rutherford's numbers are very interesting.

It may be too late to run for office in the 2020 primary, but be thinking of running for city council, or other non-partisan office in November. Ask your local Registrar's office to find out what you can run for. Make it a point to run for future elections. We are the majority. There are millions of us. If we all run for office, we can truly revolutionize the political-economic system. You ARE the one you've been waiting for. But you can't walk through that door without putting your foot forward. You won't be alone.

I met with Indivisible Vallejo-Benicia meeting on January 17. It was great to touch bases with what are becoming old friends and meet some new friends too.

Some images from the Women's March in Santa Rosa. Women's rights to healthcare have been under assault from the very start of the Trump regime. Our campaign stands with women across this country in acknowledging that women's rights are human rights, that women are entitled to be paid equally to men (not 79 cents on the dollar) and that abortions and birth control are a part of basic healthcare.

National banks invest in oil corporations, oil pipelines, private prisons, weapons contractors, border contractors etc. In short, they invest in the destruction of the planet and its people. That's why public banking can be so important. Instead of throwing up our hands and saying "There's nothing we can do. This is what's profitable." we can divest from big banks and invest in banks that will invest in people and preservation of nature instead. When that happens on a consistent and larger scale, we can take the profit OUT of destruction. And what a difference that would make!

It was a beautiful day for a march yesterday. The MLK March in Vallejo is one of my favorite events of the year.

Many people want to remember Dr. King as an inspiring speaker and a civil rights leader, and he was, but let's not forget that Dr. King knew that true equality cannot happen without economic equality. What use is being free to buy a car, or a house, if you can't afford to pay for it? Until we have economic equality, there will not be justice.
