CHBA BC Making an Impact at Home Building Week in Canada
CHBA BC
This week, home builder associations from across the country are gathered in Banff for CHBA National’s Home Building Week in Canada. The week is an important opportunity for CHBA BC to meet with our colleagues to share best practices, exchange ideas and set the priorities of the national association for the next year.
We are pleased to share the news that at Wednesday’s Annual Meeting of Members, CHBA BC’s Past President and Sea to Sky member, Alex Tavuchis, was named to the CHBA National board as a Presidential Appointee. In addition, CHBA CI’s Matt McCurrach will serve as 1st Vice President for the next year before moving into the role of President.
Both Alex and Matt are amazing representatives of CHBA BC as well as their local associations and we know they will have a great impact at the national level.
The finale of the week is tonight’s CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence. We’re looking forward to hearing which CHBA BC members will be bringing home one of these prestigious awards.
Details on the national awards are here.

CHBA BC Education Takes the Show on the Road
CHBA BC
Last week, our education team was on the road to Penticton, Nelson and Cranbrook to deliver a one-day training session, Mind the Gap: Preventing failures in HVAC and Airtightness. This marks the first in-person training session CHBA BC has delivered since the start of the pandemic.
Icon Homes founder, Joe Hart and Mark Bernhardt, President of Bernhardt Contracting took attendees for a deep dive into the BC Energy Step Code metrics for Part 9 buildings and how to achieve Step 3 and higher through design and building techniques to build better and minimize costs.
The highlight of each training session was an on-site visit for attendees at each location to conduct a blower door test at an active home-building project.
The roadshow also included a member engagement event in Cranbrook, where Pauline Rupp delivered an update on the BC Building Code and Carbon Pollution standard. The event brought both members and non-members together to discuss industry issues at a local pub.
Additional dates have been added to this roadshow, including April 28, 2023, in Kelowna. For more details, please click here.

Share Your Opinions on BC's Labour Market Shortages
BC Chamber of Commerce
British Columbia’s workforce challenges are top of mind for most employers and a roadblock to growth, investment and success.
With that in mind, the BC Chamber of Commerce has launched a new two-phase study – Addressing the Labour Market Gap - that will seek to understand the disconnect between employers and job seekers and identify appropriate solutions.
Funded by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, the work will be undertaken in two phases through to January 2024:
- Phase 1 kicks off with the launch of the unique “Addressing the Labour Market Gap” survey that will seek to understand the needs of both employers and job seekers.
- Phase 2 will comprise community engagement activities in each of the seven economic regions of the province to identify appropriate solutions to the data findings.
The survey will run from February 7-24, 2023, at 5.00 pm PT. Access the survey here

Pace Of Housing Starts Drops to Lowest Since 2020 Despite Supply Shortage
Vancouver Sun
The pace of housing starts slowed in January to its lowest level since September 2020, according to data from CMHC.
The decline comes amid growing concern that a chronic housing supply shortage has driven up real estate prices and rents to unaffordable levels in recent years.
In June, the CMHC projected Canada would need to build 3.5 million additional housing units by 2030 to make housing affordable for all — a target that would require the pace of housing starts to more than double its current level.
